How to differentiate your MPS offering
EveryonePrint 22 May 2020

The concept of offering Managed Print Services (MPS) has become almost the standard for resellers of office equipment.  Most manufacturers, resellers, dealers will offer managed print services in conjunction with the hardware they sell.  This started as a way for businesses to differentiate themselves. Relying on hardware technology as your only form of differentiation has become very difficult, if not impossible. Being able to wrap the hardware sale with a services layer became a way to provide value and differentiation, to your customer.

Customers gravitated to this model, as it allowed them to introduce efficiency to their organization while reducing operational costs.

The question is:
Now that MPS has become the standard, how do you continue to provide value and differentiation to your customers?
The answers lie in the services that you are offering.

A typical MPS offering

A typical MPS offering will claim to provide a total solution for managing and optimizing your printers, their output, and the people and processes that support these devices. This includes:

  • Pages produced by office workers, mobile workers and production print operations
  • Office desktop printers, multifunction printers, and copiers
  • Paper, ink, toner and other supplies and consumables needed on a regular basis
  • IT support to quickly identify when a printer, multifunction printer, or copier has a fault/error

The more advanced MPS provider has begun to include software solutions into their offering to introduce things like pull printing and document process automation. The savings offered by these changes can be as much as 15-30% of a customer’s annual print spend.

Why not mention print infrastructure?

The one area that almost no MPS provider is talking about, is the print infrastructure.  When we think of a typical infrastructure with print servers, it is understable why print infrastructure is not mentioned. The server is a necessary commodity that the customer will source and manage through their IT department.  But with the innovation of the Cloud, the concept of moving the IT infrastructure from on-premise to the cloud has become widely accepted – even preferred.  For an MPS provider, who wants to focus on print cost reduction and optimization, why not truly differentiate your offering by extending this to the print infrastructure as well?  Help your customer further their cloud journey, by moving the print infrastructure to the cloud.

The IT optimization and simplification will lower the IT burden currently on the customer around a traditional print environment.  You can further optimize this by introducing the concept of a fully-featured single print driver to support an entire print fleet.  The cost savings offered by removing print servers and introducing a single print driver can be dramatic.

But the benefits are not only for your customers, moving to a true multi-tenant cloud-based application offers you, as the provider, a simpler way to deploy and manage the print hardware for all your customers.   The concept of having to send a technician onsite when a new printer is deployed, or in need of trouble shooting, is gone.  By utilizing a cloud-based solution, you can manage the deployment and troubleshooting from a single web-based console.  Allowing you to optimize your own internal processes and provide faster resolution to customer issues.
